Stippling - June 13th, 2011

Stippling consits of creating tonal values (light, medium and dark) using dots.
Tonal values are achieved by varying the pressure of dots, the spacing between dots and the number of dots.

The Art of Copying - 25th May, 2011

The steps for copying are as follows:
     1. Draw a grid on your drawing page.
     2. Count the number of blocks on the X-axis and the number of blocks on the Y-axis.
     3. Then, draw a grid onto the picture that you wish to copy. Be sure to put the same number of blocks on the X-axis and the Y-axis as you did on the paper.

The Collage

One of the most interesting topics we did this term was the collage.

A collage consists of sticking scraps of unrelated materials onto a flat surface as a composition.

Tips on making a good collage:
     1. Take your time while making the collage.
     2. Experiment your work

Procedure:
     1. Collect materials
     2. Sort materials
     3. Clear the surface for the collage.
     4. Tear the material (E.g. Paper)
     5. Use appropriate glue and apply this glue to torn materials.
     6. Arrange your pieces according to your desired design.

Below is an example of a collage:  (Source: http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=collage&view=detail&id=A3FD766934A954045A3B827D9E7350C5DB1A748F&first=0)

Pastels - 17th May, 2011

Today in class we learnt about pastels.

There are two different types of pastels:
      1. Oil pastels
      2. Chalk pastels

Oil pastels can be mixed with artist turpentine. A knead eraser can be used to blend and remove chalk pastel. Pastel can be used on pastel paper or water colour paper (cold pressed).

The pastel drawing must be fixed , that is, sprayed to prevent it from smudging.

Wrapping and Blending - 9th May, 2011

Today we learnt about the different types of tonal techniques. The two that we learnt today were blending and wrapping:

Blending is a tonal technique of shading or painting so that there is a gentle and gradual transition from one shade of dark or light to another shade which is darker or lighter than the first shade. To blend, use either a 2B, 4B or 6B pencil, to shade where one shade meets another.

Wrapping is another tonal technique where the person makes circles on the drawing repeatedly. This can be done with different colours, to make one final colour.
